Christian Pierret, former Minister in charge of Industry, Trade, SMEs and Consumer Affairs, from June 1997 to May 2002, joined the law firm August Debouzy as a Partner in the Public, Regulatory, Energy, Environment and Lobbying practice group as of July 1, 2002.
Alumnus of ENA, the prestigious “Grande Ecole” for the top-level civil servants and senior officials, Christian Pierret has had a dual career in the political and public or private sectors.
He was Member of Parliament (1978-1993 and 1997-2002). As such, he was the Budget Bill Rapporteur-general for five years (1981-1986). He was Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the Caisse des Dépôts (1988-1993). Christian Pierret is Honorary MP and Honorary Mayor of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges (22.000 inhabitants).
In the private sector, he created a venture capital firm (SADEPAR) in 1990 in the Lorraine region. He was Executive-Vice-Chairman of Accor group (1993-1996), a world-class hotel group, where he was more specifically in charge of legal and tax issues as well as M&A.
He was co-founder of three “New Innovative Companies”: De’inove (Bio-tech industry), Pharnext (Pharma industry), Abivax (Pharma industry).
Known as a specialist in the regulations governing public-sector firms, liberal oriented, he initiated the so-called "Pierret Act" of February 10, 2000, on the opening up of France's national electricity and NTIC markets to competition, and the local and regional territorial communities’ legislation.
On European level, he chaired the European Council of Ministers for Telecommunications, Industry, Energy, Environment Renewables, during the second half of 2001 (French Presidency). During his term, he boosted the adoption of the first “Telecom package”, a compound of four Directives.
Christian Pierret’s main focus is corporate business, interface between public sector and private firms in such issues as environment for instance, as well as European law (concentration, competition, state aids): Chairman of the French Energy Think Tank “Vista”, Chairman of the “Jefferson Circle” and Vice-Chairman of French section of Franco-British Council.
