The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, signed on 22 January 2019 fully recognises the importance of harmonised business law between France and Germany to promote the development of trade relations and investments between the two countries.
Following on from the Elysée Treaty and its additional protocol of 1988, it confers a new objective on the Economic and Financial Affairs Council. Economy and finance ministers, along with governors of the central banks, are now responsible not only for harmonising economic policies and overseeing fiscal convergence, but also for harmonising French and German business legislation, above and beyond the simple application of common European legal standards. The German Desk, which is confronted daily with the difficulties resulting from the significant differences which continue to exist between the two countries in this respect, is seeing the greater cooperation emerge between companies in the two countries.
