Metaverse: the European Commission enters the game

Before the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee, Commission Vice-President Vestager confirmed that a non-legislative initiative on virtual worlds, including the metaverse, will be presented before the summer, probably in May. The Competition Commissioner stressed that it is essential that these technological developments respect Europe's values. She also noted that many existing texts (the DMA, DSA, etc.) or those in the process of being adopted (Data Act, AI Act, etc.) are clearly likely to apply to these universes. Finally, she insisted on the objective of preventing virtual worlds from organising "lock-in" situations for users and therefore pointed out the importance of ensuring interoperability between these platforms.
