August Debouzy advised Mr. Jean Camus on the transfer to the French State of an exceptional collection of archives, carefully preserved since 1960. Albert Camus' heirs were determined to ensure its long-term preservation and accessibility, and chose to permanently entrust this major literary heritage to public stewardship.
Comprising, in particular, manuscripts of major works and valuable correspondence, this collection has been recognised by the French Ministry of Culture as a work of major heritage interest. This designation acknowledges its significance for the national heritage and ensures its long-term preservation as well as its accessibility to researchers, cultural institutions and the general public, in France and internationally.
This major transaction required close coordination across the firm's Intellectual Property and Art Law practice, which took the lead, alongside its Public Law and Tax Law teams. August Debouzy's multidisciplinary approach made it possible to structure the transaction and address all of its legal dimensions. It illustrates the firm's ability to provide tailored advice on exceptional heritage transactions.
The engagement was led by Bernard Cazeneuve together with Amélie Tripet, Inès Bouzayen, Charlotte Chen, Elie Bétard and Gaël Trouiller from the firm's Intellectual Property, Tax Law and Public Law practices.
August Debouzy worked closely with Elisabeth Maisondieu-Camus, representing Mrs. Catherine Camus, and Anne Gozard, representing Mr. Jean Camus.
